Hi everyone,

I've been on prednisone for the past couple of weeks, and while it's been helping with my condition, I'm noticing some side effects that worry me. My dosage is 60 mg per day. Is this normal? Should I be concerned?

Hi SunnyDays78,

Thanks for reaching out! Can you describe some of the symptoms you're experiencing? This will help me understand your situation better.

Sure, DrMedic123. I've been feeling really thirsty, and I'm urinating much more frequently than usual. My face seems swollen, especially around the cheeks, and my appetite has increased a lot. Also, I feel very restless and can't sleep well at night.

Thank you for detailing your symptoms, SunnyDays78. It sounds like you're experiencing some common side effects associated with prednisone use at higher doses.

Here are a few things to consider:

  • Thirst and Frequent Urination: Prednisone can increase fluid retention and cause an imbalance in electrolytes, leading to increased thirst and urination.

  • Facial Swelling: This is often referred to as "moon face," which is common with higher doses of corticosteroids like prednisone. The swelling occurs primarily around the cheeks and forehead.

  • Increased Appetite: Prednisone can stimulate your appetite, leading to weight gain or difficulty in maintaining a healthy diet.

  • Restlessness and Insomnia: Corticosteroids can affect sleep patterns and cause restlessness due to their stimulating effects on the nervous system.

It's important to talk with your prescribing physician about these symptoms. They may adjust your dosage or provide additional medications to manage these side effects better.

Have you had a chance to discuss these issues with your doctor yet?

You're welcome, SunnyDays78! It's great that you're proactive about addressing these concerns. I would recommend making an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible to discuss these side effects.

In the meantime, here are a few tips that might help manage some of these symptoms:

  • Hydration: Stay well-hydrated but also try to limit fluid intake in the evening before bedtime.

  • Diet and Exercise: Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. Light exercise can also help regulate your appetite and improve sleep.

  • Sleep Hygiene: Establish a consistent sleep schedule, create a relaxing bedtime routine, and avoid stimulants like caffeine or electronics close to bedtime.

Remember, these suggestions are not a substitute for medical advice from your doctor. It's crucial to discuss your symptoms with them so they can provide personalized guidance based on your specific health needs.
