Forum Topic: Prednisone Usage and Side Effects
User: HealthSeeker123
Hi everyone,
I’ve been prescribed Prednisone by my doctor due to some severe allergies. I’m a bit nervous about the potential side effects. Does anyone have experience with this medication? My doc said it’s for short-term use, but I want to be prepared.
Thank you!

Hello HealthSeeker123,
Thanks for reaching out! Prednisone is a corticosteroid that can really help manage severe allergic reactions and inflammation. It works by suppressing the immune system response, which reduces swelling and other symptoms associated with allergies or autoimmune conditions.
For short-term use (a few days to a couple of weeks), it’s generally well-tolerated. However, you’re right to be cautious about side effects, even if they might not apply to everyone. Common ones include mood swings, increased appetite leading to weight gain, and difficulty sleeping.
If you experience any severe side effects like extreme changes in behavior or vision issues, do reach out to your healthcare provider immediately.
Let me know how it goes!

Thanks so much for the info, DocOnCall! I’ll keep an eye on my appetite and mood. My doc also mentioned taking calcium and vitamin D supplements while on Prednisone. Is that related to bone density?

Hi HealthSeeker123,
Yes, exactly right! Long-term use of steroids like Prednisone can lead to decreased bone density over time, which increases the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. That's why your doctor recommended calcium and vitamin D supplements.
Even though you’re on it for a short term, these supplements are still beneficial as they support overall bone health and might help mitigate any minor effects that could occur from even brief periods of steroid use.
Just make sure to take the supplements at least 1-2 hours before or after taking Prednisone to ensure proper absorption.

Got it, MedMaven89! That makes a lot more sense now. Thanks for clarifying!
I also noticed that my doctor instructed me not to stop the medication abruptly. Why is that?

Hi HealthSeeker123,
Good question! Abruptly stopping Prednisone can lead to withdrawal symptoms because your body might have reduced its natural production of cortisol, a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands.
Stopping suddenly can cause issues like fatigue, joint and muscle pain, nausea, dizziness, fever, or chills. To avoid these, your doctor will gradually decrease your dosage over time, allowing your body to slowly resume normal cortisol production.
Always follow your healthcare provider's advice on how to taper off Prednisone to prevent any potential complications.
Hope this helps!
